What Is a Root Canal?: A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth’s root.

Why You Might Need One:

• Tooth pain from decay or injury that has reached the tooth’s nerve.
• Swelling or tenderness near the affected tooth.

What Happens During a Root Canal?:

1. X-ray: Your dentist takes X-rays to see the shape of the root canals and determine if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone.
2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area.
3. Pulpectomy: An opening is made, and the damaged nerve and pulp are removed from inside the tooth.
4. Filling: The roots that have been opened are filled with special, medicated, dental materials that restore the tooth to full function.

After the Procedure:

• Your tooth may feel sensitive for a few days due to natural tissue inflammation, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure.
• Over-the-counter pain medications usually relieve discomfort.
• Most teeth that have had root canal treatment need a crown (cap) afterward to protect the tooth, prevent it from breaking, and restore it to full function.
